1.30pm high tide today so plan was to get up early and hope there was at
least a smidgen of W in the wind to allow a sail somewhere close, possibly
Lancing. However at 8am a true southerly was blowing so reluctantly decided
to set off on the long drive to Pagham.
Glad I did! Had a solid wave board session in stonking cross-shore winds
with some nice ramps pushing in, allowing good jumping and the occasional
downwind ride. Started off on the 4.5 but quickly realised that this was
way too big so out came the 4.0 and it actually got used today for the
first time ever! Bonkers windy...was overpowered on the 4.0 by the end,
even with mucho downhaul. Sailing was hard work since the tide soon came up
which killed off the waves to a large extent and gave rise to a fair degree
of high-tide choppy/lumpiness. Like driving over a cattle grid at times. So
as would be expected in this amount of wind, not always 100% satisfying,
since needed to concentrate mostly on control and survival rather than
going for stuff. Still, 4.0 was pretty much spot on for most of the session
and was just great being out in such mental conditions. Loads of other
people out, including several pros, I guess cos where else on the south
coast would be any good in a true southerly.
I sort of went for a couple more back loops today and got good height and
more rotation on my second attempt...resulting in a "oh sh*t what do I do
now moment" after I spotted my landing and was plummeting back towards the
water. That was the first time I'd ever got a feeling of the coming down
bit before trying to land and it was proper scary - how the feck do you do
the next bit spin round, land nose-first and hang onto your kit?!?!?
First ever session at Pagham, having heard so many rave reviews about it,
and I can see the potential - the sandbars did kick up some nice waves (by
south coast standards) at one point. However there were a couple of not so
good things about the place:
- the waves only stayed good for about an hour; before then there was not
enough water to sail, and after then the tide came up and lumpified the
water, plus a nasty shorebreak
- long-ish walk over painful sharp shells/stones from van to water
But definitely the place I'll be going back to next time it's a wave-board
windy southerly.
Best bit of the session was packing up and then getting changed with my
nice warm van shielding me from the wind and rain, at the same time as
several car-owners around me getting soaked whilst they were
de-wetsuiting!
Two solid sessions yesterday and today - all in all - great weekend :->
